Saraswati - a school of Indian classical music was established with the intent to impart the teachings and knowledge of this ancient tradition. Here at Saraswati, we teach Indian classical music in the form of instrumental and vocal music, adhering to the original oral tradition of teaching classical music. This tradition of classical music dates back thousands of years, to the time of the Vedas. The Samaveda, one of the four Vedas, defines and depicts music at length.
Saraswati, the name inspired by the Hindu goddess of learning (vidya); who is worshiped by the seeker of music and fine arts. Indian classical music has a long history of its existence and is deeply rooted in the culture of India. In the modern era (post 15th century A.D.), it flourished and grew under the banner commonly came to be known as 'gharana'. Over the past few centuries, it has been syncretized with Indian folk music and Persian music, the genre that has evolved into what we know as Hindustani classical music.
At Saraswati, we offer ♪ music lessons ♪ for instrumental and vocal in the Hindustani classical discipline. Classes are offered in several ways: in-person and online. Emphasis is laid on practical training mainly; although contextual background into the history of Indian classical music and theory is shared relevantly.
Classes
New students are required to pay an initiation fee of $120. Fees are due at the beginning of the month. For students starting in the middle of the month, fees will be applied on a pro-rated basis. For any schedule change, students will be notified in advance. If the student misses a class, she/he can reschedule a make-up class within the current month.

Sitar Rentals & Maintenance
Sitars are available for rent starting at $50 per month. Students will be responsible for any damage or theft of the rented instrument. Maintenance charges for the instrument may apply as provided here. Sitar maintenance plans are also available. The basic sitar maintenance plan starts at $10 per month - and includes the replacement of main strings as required.
Class Etiquette
Typically, the class duration is about 50 - 60 minutes. All students are expected to be on time. Please provide five minutes for the overlay between student batches. Instruments are available for the classes upon request. However, students are encouraged to bring in their instruments. Not only does this help them keep their instruments in tune but also establishes a good repo with the instrument. Classes are conducted sitting on the floor, keeping in with the age-old Indian tradition of sitar playing. Sit-on rugs or pillows are provided for comfort. Generally, classes are conducted in batches. Different fees apply for personal coaching. During the class, students are encouraged to take notes for future reference.
